The Flag's up for our mighty Fourths
Our team with the GF spoils - flag, shield and premiership medallions. L-R: Back - Manu Singh, Dean Lawson, Jackson Partridge, David Lubansky, Lachlan Smith, Jason Ripa, Joel Italia, Dean Jukic and Mark Gauci. Front - Luke Sevenson, Ben Baldacchino and Sudarshan Devkota. Moonee Valley may have had a blip against Reds in the qualifying final, but our Fourths redeemed themselves and won the match that really counts - The Mercantile Cricket Association D Sunday Grand Final. We were unable to beat Reds all season - a washout, two losses in the regular season and then the first final - but that counted for nought when the chips were down in the big game on March 22. Played at Reds' home ground at Walker Oval in Parkville, Moonee Valley won 8/219cc to Reds 157. Amazingly, it was a third Premiership win as captain for Manu Singh, who led the troops well in the Grand Final with both bat and ball. At right: Moonee Valley captain Manu Singh (far right) receives the Premiership shield from Mercantile Cricket Association secretary Rhidian Thomas. It was a game for young and old for Moonee Valley, with three teens and three Life Members among the 12. The game brought up Mark Gauci's fifth Premiership, while it was flag No. 4 for Dean Jukic and No. 2 for Dean Lawson. Lachlan Smith was judged Player of the Match by the umpires Santosh Pulakanti and Karthik Sidhartha for his crucial 50 not out in the lower order, then following it up with 2/20 - taking the last two wickets to clinch the win. A strong contingent of Moonee Valley's current and past players, as well as families and supporters, ensured that we outnumbered Reds from the sidelines. It was Premiership No. 49 for Moonee Valley in both senior and junior ranks, since we won our first flag in our inaugural season 1971/72. **** For more pictures from the Premiership win, click HERE
