Juniors - pre-season news

by

Thankyou to all the parents who have registered the players for the coming season. Between the registration day, the parent information day and inquiries to the club, we have almost filled our team lists for the season and are well on the way to a great start to the year.
Junior Co-ordinators:
Leigh Holder and Peter Pickering are the junior co-ordinators this year, taking over from Kevin Gardiner who has filled the role for many years. Channa DeSilva, one of the senior players who has been involved with junior coaching last season, will take over as the head junior coach under the title of Director of Junior Cricket.
Peter will be away overseas from 5 September to 4 October, and Leigh from 20 September to 4 October. During this period Channa will be the point of contact (see details below), but otherwise Leigh and Peter will be best to contact about junior club matters across the season.
Pre-season training:
U10: Training will commence on Monday 31 August, 5-6pm. It will continue on the following Mondays, 7 and 14 September.
There is no training during the school holidays, and we resume on 5 October. The first match is Friday 9 October.
At this stage we are looking for a parent to act as coach of the team. The club will organise for Level 1 certificate training for the coach, and until a coach is appointed Leigh and Peter will be organising Monday night training.
U12: Training will commence on Wednesday 2 September, running 5-6pm. It will continue on the following Wednesdays, 9 and 16 September.

There is no training during school holidays,  and we resume on 7 October. The first match is Friday 9 October.
Leigh will be coach of the older group of boys, most of whom will have played U12 last year, and Peter will take the younger group who have moved up from U10s this season.
As we have had such a terrific response to recruiting, we are considering whether to have a third team and will advise when the numbers are finalised before the season starts.
U14: Training will commence on Tuesday 1 September, 5-6pm. It will continue on the following Tuesdays 8 and 15 September.
There is no training on school holidays, and we resume on 6 October. The first match is Friday 9 October.
Channa DeSilva, one of the club senior players and coach of the U14s last season, will again be the U14 coach for 2015/16.
Milo:
Milo will begin once the season for the junior teams starts. Date to be confirmed.

Team managers:
Experience has shown that cricket teams function best when it's not just the coach organising everything, and junior teams are no different. We are looking to have a parent be team manager for each of the junior teams if possible so that there is always someone in charge when the coach is on the field, eg organising a parent for scoring. It is not a difficult job and does not have to be the same person all the time, but it will be good to give each coach a back-up during the match .
Equipment:
Although more boys have their own equipment, the club will be supplying a kit for each team. However, we ask that every boy has his own box/protector for reasons of hygiene.
Friday nights at the Club:
The Club is looking forward to our new junior season, with a home game at the Ormond Park ground every Friday night for one of the teams and the use of the club's second ground at Debney Park. We plan to have a regular sausage sizzle and will be opening the canteen and bar for drinks for parents during the home games. More details to follow.
Finally, all teams play Friday nights this year for the first time, and we are looking forward to a real sense of identity in the junior ranks at Moonee Valley Cricket Club.
We look forward to seeing you all.
