Nate Tons Up -
first century for
Valleys
Congratulations to Seconds captain Nathan Waites on his first century for Moonee Valley. Nate carried his bat for 110 not out in the January 31 game against East Keilor, but we ran out of overs and finished 16 runs short of the total. Nate scored his tally at a run a ball as he led from the front in trying to chase down the total, and we finished our 36 overs eight wickets down. Nate put on a bright start with Max Jones, and took the score to 99 before Max was out for 50 in the 19th over. At left: Nathan Waites in the East Keilor rooms after his 110 not out. No other batsman reached double figures, as Nate tried to hold the innings together. It's his second season at Moonee Valley, and Nate put his hand up to captain the Seconds this year to help bring alone some of our younger players. He played most of the previous season in the Firsts, and has been called on for three games this season to go up the grades. Congratulations Nathan - we're sure that there are more centuries for you to come at Moonee Valley in this season and future years.
We win back the Webb-Johnson/Pascu Cup
The Moonee Valley Cricket Club has won back the Webb-Johnson/Pascu Cup, after falling short in the past two years.
We prevailed in a tight finish over the Moonee Ponds Cricket Club, who finished six short of our competitive total when they lost their last wicket. The Cup was first contested in 2020/21 following the passing of Moonee Valley's Heath Webb-Johnson and Moonee Ponds' Gary Pascu, and both clubs saw the need to promote and highlight men's health. It is a perpetual reminder of two loved and respected players and mates no longer with us. Above: Our winning team! L-R. Back - Aksha Perera, Tom Janetzki, Krish Kanchan, Dejan Gilevski, Luke Brock and Jaspreet Bhatti. Front - Dan Fisher, Max Jones, Ben Tarran, Hayden Rayner and Brayden McGregor. At the front are Bree and Reid Webb-Johnson with the Cup. The January 20 match was played at Aberfeldie Park as a Twenty20. Heath's widow Lezanne and their children Reid and Bree attended the game. We batted first after Moonee Ponds won the toss. Scores of 39 from Krish Kanchan and 32 from Brayden McGregor anchored our innings, which finished on 8/144. At right: Krish Kanchan hits out in his innings top score of 39. We had Moonee Ponds quickly on the back foot with two quick wickets to have them 2/3, then Dejan Gilevski picked up two wickets in one over to have them 4/44. They consolidated and built their score until the 19th over, when Brayden McGregor took three wickets and ran out their form batsman in the space of five balls. They needed 17 off the last over, but fell short when they lost their last wicket on 138. A good crowd of Moonee Valley players and spectators cheered on the match alongside our Moonee Ponds counterparts, and we thank them for putting on a barbecue afterwards. Thanks also to accredited umpires Ron Pontague and Tarek Patel for donating their services. As the Cup holder, we will get to host next season's match. ****For more pictures, click HERE
Back to Barooga - it's our 12th year
Our winning team for Game 4, which played under lights on the Barooga No. 1 ground. L-R: Back - Glen Courts, Stephen Ward, Ben Lucas, Tony Gleeson, Matt Thomas, Cameron McGregor and Channa DeSilva. Front - Allan Cumming, Jason Ripa, Maks Rahman, Craig Pridham and Peter O'Kane. Moonee Valley played its 12th annual Over 35s tournament in Barooga, and it was a chance for current players to get together with some past greats of our Club and to meet some new friends. We played four games across the January 12-15 tournament - two 40-over fixtures and two Twenty20s - for two wins and two losses. At left: Allan Cumming prepares to face up in the first game. We came second overall in the tournament, with the winner determined on net run rate. Our team comprised current players Mark Gauci, Allan Cumming, Jason Ripa, Maks Rahman, Tony Gleeson, Glen Courts, Brendan Rhodes, Daniel Phillips, Stephen Ward, Frank Ripa and Charlie Walker, past greats Sean O'Kane, Craig Pridham, Channa DeSilva, Peter O'Kane and Matt Thomas, and friends Cameron McGregor and Ben Lucas. Our batting stars were Jason Ripa with 94 runs @ 47, Glen Courts with 91 @ 30.33 and Tony Gleeson with 61 @ 61. Buddha's 91 runs took him past 3000 for Moonee Valley. Our bowling was even, led by Peter O'Kane with 6 wickets @ 11.5, including a match haul of 5/22, and Craig Pridham with 5 wickets @ 18.2. We presented Moonee Valley MVP medallions for the matches - Glen Courts was voted MVP for the first game, Maks Rahman for the combined Twenty20s and Peter O'Kane for the final match. Club President Charlie Walker said the Barooga tournament is "part of the DNA" of the Moonee Valley Cricket Club and we are already making plans for next year's event. One of the options we are considering is entering a team in the Over 50s section, as well as our ongoing involvement in the Over 35s. ****For more pictures from our 2026 tournament, click HERE
