Valley’s Andy wins his Baggy Green

Moonee Valley Cricket Club’s Andrew Payton has been selected in the Australian cricket team to play in a Special Olympics tournament in India in November.

Teams from all the major cricket nations will be attending, and Andy is one of just three Victorians in Australia’s 15-man squad.PaytonAndrew05-06 5cm

And we might even get a chance to see Andy competing, as ESPN Star Sports will be broadcasting games through pay TV in 25 countries.

Andy, 22, is about to start his third season at Moonee Valley Cricket Club, playing mainly in the Fourths and the one-day grades.

Charlie Walker, who captains him when he plays in the Sevenths, said Andy (right) is a hard-hitting middle order batsman and a handy on-the-spot bowler.

He said the whole Club was proud of Andy’s achievements in being selected to play cricket for Australia.

“We’ve discussed Andy’s achievement at the senior committee, and plan to hold a benefit day down at Ormond Park just before he leaves for India to raise a bit of money to help with the cost,” Charlie said.

“We’re sorry we’ll be losing him from Moonee Valley for a couple of matches as he’s a more-than-handy player, but not many cricketers get the chance to represent their country and we wish him all the best.

“I’m sure he’ll be in good form though when he gets back to play for us.”

Andy, who lives in Keilor, is one of eight players with intellectual disabilities at Moonee Valley – two in junior ranks.

All are integrated in our teams, and over the past season the six senior-list players have played in our Moreland Moonee Valley Cricket Association grades ranging from our Third Eleven through to the Sevenths.

The Special Olympics International Cricket Cup will be held in Mumbai from November 6 to 13.

The major international sporting event marks the official launch of cricket as a recognised sport for Special Olympics globally.

Teams from England, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal are also competing.
