Sam's the man

Sam Coventry-PooleSam's the man of the moment

Sam Coventry-Poole was the man of the moment when he brought up two personal milestones under pressure on January 7.

Playing in the Seconds in their tense win at home over East Keilor, Sam brought up his 50th senior game for the Club and also his 1000th senior run.

He's had an interrupted season in 2011/12 due to his study commitments, but in his first game for a couple of months Sam was cool under pressure.

He smashed a four off the fourth ball of the 40th and last over to get us past the East Keilor total of 167 and win us the match. His 13th run brought up his 1000th-run milestone, but he continued to knuckle down to see the job through.

He had shown great presence of mind in his 27 not out to ensure he didn't buckle under the pressure being applied by the opposition. He kept a cool head, and was able to steer us home.

Sam also took the gloves behind the stumps and had a good game, with two good catches. Sam has scored 64 in his two knocks this year - both in the Seconds - for a healthy season's average of 64.0.

Sam is the fifth player to come through our junior program to reach 1000 senior runs - behind Matt Thomas, Tom King, Jesse Felle and Joshua Maginness.

He scored his maiden century in 2009/10, with a hefty 120 not out against Glenroy in the Thirds, playing in C Turf.

Sam played his junior career at Moonee Valley, and his 106 junior games has him equal fifth on our most-games tally.

He scored 1161 junior runs at an average of 29.03 - meaning Sam's in our Top 10 junior run-scorers of all time.

And the scary thing is his senior career is just getting into full stride! Well done, Sam.
