Junior players – on their way to life
Games played in our junior grades now count some of the way towards life membership of the Moonee Valley Cricket Club.
As the result of a change to our Bylaws approved at the June 30 annual general meeting, half of the games played in the junior grades are counted towards the mark of 200 games, which entitles players to life membership.
Previously, players had to have notched up 200 senior games to earn life membership.
Life membership is also bestowed on people who have given extraordinary and meritorious service to the Club.
Junior co-ordinator Charlie Walker, who is also on the Club committee, said the proposal was supported by the committee and endorsed by the members at the AGM.
He said our bylaws were probably drawn up before Moonee Valley started with juniors in 1996, and so the careers of our young players wouldn’t have even been considered.
“The bylaws state that the Club recognises longevity of service,” Charlie said.
“Now our bylaws fully endorse that by recognising the playing careers of our juniors.”
The bylaw also varied the 200-game mark by requiring that players awarded life membership have to have played at least one game in each of 16 seasons. This recognises the growth of our one-day sides and other competitions in which our players participate, such as the 2005/06 Mid Week Turf comp.
Charlie said the 16-season requirement was roughly the time a player in the two-day grades would take to reach 200 games, and would preserve equity with one-day players who notch up more matches each season.
Charlie said typically a junior who plays through all the age groups would notch up about 90 matches, so the change would in effect credit those players 45 games towards life membership.
